The summer vacation season is coming, and what better way to kick off that time of year with a classic Shanghai Savage Club Long Lunch?  We have an excellent speaker lined up whose topic is "Living History: Realities of Making Historical Documentaries in China Today."

Christian Petersen-Clausen is a documentary filmmaker based in Shanghai. He has created films for ARTE, DW, ZDF, CCTV, Discovery Channel, Budweiser, Porsche and together with 吴雨潇 is the creator of “Living History: Stories from the Opening of China,” a historical documentary series exploring people-to-people relations between Western and Chinese citizens in the period following the reopening of China in 1979.

In his presentation to the SSC, Christian will take you behind the scenes of this ongoing series, for which he is aiming to create 100 interview episodes with contemporary witnesses, among whom are academics, diplomats, policymakers, businesspeople, artists, students, athletes and others. We will gain insights about the research and filmmaking process, the highlights but also challenges of making such an ambitious documentary in China today, where at times it can feel as if everything is a little bit sensitive.

The lunch will be at Abbey Road, where we can enjoy the patio before and after the event, with classic lunch dishes -- and a few new ones!  We hope to see you there.
