Thorium energy, does it have a future?

Thorium has been hailed as a potential energy source that provides safe, affordable, unlimited and easily found supplies while cleaning up the mistakes littering our past nuclear power attempts. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory operated a Thorium nuclear reactor operational from 1965 to 1969 that produced clean safe energy. In 1968, Nobel laureate and discoverer of plutonium, Glenn Seaborg, publicly announced to the Atomic Energy Commission, of which he was chairman, that the thorium-based reactor had been successfully developed and tested. Why was it shut down?

India has expects to have 62 thorium based reactors operational by 2025. Canada, China, and Norway have trial reactor projects under way. What is this new power source and why does it attract so much controversy?
